Thomas G. Hancuch is a Shareholder at Vedder Price, representing employers in all aspects of employee benefits, labor and employment law. His practice focuses on employee benefit plan design and administration, including ERISA, Internal Revenue Code, and Affordable Care Act compliance; benefit claims and litigation; employee relations and benefits aspects of mergers, acquisitions, workforce reductions and outsourcing; severance and exit incentive programs and agreements; remote and hybrid work arrangements; leaves of absence and accommodation of employees with disabilities; employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims; employee leasing and worker classification; executive compensation; wage and hour laws; employee discipline and discharge; and other human resources matters.
Mr. Hancuch’s clients range in size from small professional corporations with a handful of employees to large multinational corporations. He enjoys working with management, human resources professionals and corporate counsel to develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
In 2015, Mr. Hancuch was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. He is recognized in publications such as Chambers USA and The Legal 500 for his work in Employee Health and Retirement Plans. From 2006 to 2007 and since 2018, Mr. Hancuch has been recognized in Chambers USA in the Illinois Labor & Employment: Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation category (Band 3). In addition, Legal 500 recognized him as Recommended: Labor & Employment: EBEC Design. Mr. Hancuch was selected for inclusion in the 2025 Best Lawyers in America® for Employee Benefits (ERISA) Law. In 2024, Legal 500 also recommended Mr. Hancuch in the Labor and Employment: Employee Benefits, Executive Compensation and Retirement Plans: Design category, as well as Labor and Employment: Workplace and Employment Counseling category. Mr. Hancuch is also recognized by Leading Lawyers for Employee Benefits Law and Super Lawyers for Employee Benefits.
He writes and speaks frequently on employee benefits and human resources legal topics. He is a former Co-Chair of several American Bar Association Employee Benefits Committee Subcommittees, including the Subcommittees on ERISA Preemption and on Employment Discrimination and Employee Benefits. For over a decade Mr. Hancuch served as an editor of and contributor to the leading legal treatise Employee Benefits Law, published by Bloomberg BNA.
