Vedder Price Attorneys to Speak at American Bar Association’s ERISA Basics National Institute Conference
Vedder Price Shareholder Charles B. Wolf and senior Associate Patrick W. Spangler, both members of the firm's Labor and Employment practice area, will speak at the American Bar Association's Joint Committee on Employee Benefits' ERISA Basics National Institute in Chicago, Illinois. The two-and-a-half day conference (October 16–18) will provide a comprehensive overview of current ERISA matters, including ERISA basic concepts; ERISA claims and ethical issues for in-house and union counsel, private practitioners, litigators, accountants, consultants and benefits specialists.
Mr. Wolf will be presenting on two topics, both on Thursday, October 16. The first session, "ERISA Basic Concepts—Statutory Overview," is intended to provide a basic overview of the statute's fundamental concepts as well as discuss differences among various types of pension plans and welfare benefit plans. The second session, "ERISA Basic Concepts—Regulatory and Informal Sources," will review various regulations that apply to ERISA benefit plans and other forms of rulings and guidance issued by governing agencies.
Mr. Spangler will be co-presenting the session "Collectively Bargained Plans." During this presentation, an overview of the special rules and regulations that govern multiemployer employee pension and welfare benefit plans under ERISA will be discussed, as will the developing law and regulations affecting collectively bargained plans since the Pension Protection Act of 2006 was signed into law. The session will also cover withdrawal liability issues in the M&A and bankruptcy contexts.
