Vedder Price is pleased to announce that Amy Bess, Shareholder and Chair of the Labor and Employment practice in the firm’s Washington, DC office, has been appointed by the DC Bar to the District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure (CJDT).

CJDT members conduct investigations in response to issues brought before the Commission regarding members of the judiciary. The CJDT has the authority to remove a judge for willful misconduct in office, and for other conduct which brings the judicial office into disrepute. The CJDT also has the authority to retire a judge involuntarily if the Commission determines that the judge suffers from a physical or mental disability that is permanent and which prevents or interferes with the proper performance of the judge’s duties.

“We’re proud to support Amy’s engagement with the CJDT, and her appointment as a key contributor to their important work is well deserved,” said Shareholder and Chair of the Labor and Employment practice area Elizabeth N. Hall. “Her leadership and experience will be an invaluable asset to the CJDT moving forward.”

The CJDT includes two members appointed by each of the Mayor’s Office of Washington, DC, the DC Counsel, and the DC Bar. The CJDT is Chaired by Hon. Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, United States District Judge for the District of Columbia. Created by the District of Columbia Court Reorganization Act of July 29, 1970, the CJDT is focused on maintaining public confidence in an independent, impartial, fair, and qualified judiciary, and enforcing the high standards of conduct judges must adhere to both on and off the bench.

*Editor’s Note: Since this release was published, Bess has been featured in Law360 Pulse for her appointment to the District of Columbia Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure (CJDT). The story highlighted her decades of work as an employment attorney handling sexual harassment and discrimination claims, plus earlier experience as a social worker and how that translated to this new role in which she will investigate misconduct claims against local judges.
